HUM 240 Isam and the Middle East
3 Credits
Islam and the Middle East will introduce
students to the contribution of Islam
in the formation and development of the
political, social and cultural identity
of the Middle East. It will cover the
basic elements of Islam as a religion
and the original Islamic political and
cultural traditions. It will study the
crucial moments of disjuncture that posed
challenges to the traditional society
of this region and the manner in which
the people and their leaders rose up to
them. The economic progress has been achieved
with a unique blend of preserving time
honored values, customs and practices.
The course will study how the influence
of capitalism has been tempered with strong
Islamic beliefs. The course is designed
to ‘stand alone.’
