HUM 240 Isam and the Middle East 3 Credits
Islam and the Middle East will introduce students to the contribution of Islam in the formation and development of the political, social and cultural identity of the Middle East. It will cover the basic elements of Islam as a religion and the original Islamic political and cultural traditions. It will study the crucial moments of disjuncture that posed challenges to the traditional society of this region and the manner in which the people and their leaders rose up to them. The economic progress has been achieved with a unique blend of preserving time honored values, customs and practices. The course will study how the influence of capitalism has been tempered with strong Islamic beliefs. The course is designed to ‘stand alone.’
