Statement of Problem
The purpose of the current research study is to identify the relation between work motivation and project management success in case of projects. In this, we attempt to answer four major research questions: (1). What are the constructs of work motivation in case of temporary organizations such as projects? (2). Is work motivation an antecedent of organizational commitment, and professional commitment of project workers? (3). Does commitment to organization, and profession lead to project management success, and (4). Does organization commitment and professional commitment regulate the relationship between work motivation, and project management success?
For the purpose of operationalizing our variables of interest, we consider work design perspective to define work motivation (c.f. Trist & Bamforth, 1951; Hackman & Oldham, 1976; Morgeson & Humphrey, 2006; Kanfer, Chen, & Pritchard, 2008). Furthermore, our operational definition for organizational and professional commitment is based on Meyer et al (1993) model of Affective, Continuance, and Normative commitment. Our understanding of project management success comes from Pinto and Slevin’s work on project management success (1998). We use Self Determination Theory (Deci, & Ryan, 2000) as a theoretical lens to explain the relation between work motivation; and organizational commitment, and professional commitment. We draw on the recent work by Turner, Huemann, Anbari, & Bredillet (2010) describing the Nine Schools of Project Management as a theoretical lens to support the relation between work motivation and project management success; and commitment and project management success.
Research Method
We employ quantitative research methods that are grounded in Parmenedean Ontology, and Positivist Epistemology. In order to answer research question one, we use exploratory factor analysis to identify the constructs of work motivation. We then use Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to analyze the causal relationship between our variables of interest (research questions 2, 3, and 4). The target respondents for this survey are employees working on projects with at least three years of direct project management experience. In line with the number of constructs to be measured, a sample size of 600 respondents is deemed appropriate In order to ensure the generalizability of the results, a cross sectional study is proposed.
